AmeriCorps NCCC team Oak 4 is working with the US Army Corps of Engineers on the Mississippi River Project for their second project. The team is helping with upkeep and restoration of the campgrounds on the Mississippi River. Up to this point, Oak 4 has worked at the Grant River Recreation Area in Potosi, Wisconsin; Blanding Landing in Hanover, Illinois; Pleasant Creek in Bellevue, Iowa; and the Thomson Causeway in Thomson, Illinois.

One hundred fifty-four students have been named to the Spring 2013 (January to May) Dean's List at Ellsworth Community College.
To be eligible for the Dean's List, students must have taken 12 or more credit hours during the semester (a full-time class load) and have earned at least a 3.5 grade point average while attending ECC classes in Iowa Falls or online.

James Wilborn, from Mountain Pine, Arkansas, is a member of Maple 4 in NCCC’s Class 19. He arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start his 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Maple 4 is made up of nine people from across the country, and they will serve together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region.

Kirkwood Nursing students are prepared for a career in the real world, if you consider how well they perform on their national board exams. For the first time in the college’s history, each graduating Nursing student passed the national licensure exam on the first try, besting the national average of 89 percent pass rate for first-time test takers.

Teleia Stringfellow of Riverdale, Ill, is serving as a member of the NCCC FEMA Corps team Hickory 5 at the Vinton Campus. She learned about AmeriCorps NCCC from her cousin who served with the program and recommended it to her. She chose to participate in NCCC FEMA Corps because she is passionate about helping others and wanted to help people on a broader scale.

AmeriCorps NCCC FEMA Corps team Spruce 4 has been working in the External Affairs office at FEMA’s national headquarters in Washington since late March, assisting the personnel there in many different fields related to external affairs. Some team members act as support to permanent FEMA employees in departments such as Congressional Affairs and Private sector while others have been playing important roles in ongoing projects, such as the Ready campaign.

On Thursday, May 16 and Friday, May 17 National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) FEMA Corps team Hickory 2, in partnership with the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse, organized a supplemental learning experience to their after-school program in Bridgeport, Conn. The group of service-oriented young adults and community volunteers spent the late afternoons in the classrooms performing fun, engaging and educational experiments.
